A Winter shoot with Louise, Mack & Snowy January morning.
In the middle of January, I had a wonderful shoot with Louise and her horse Mack. Although we didn’t get nearly as much snow this year as many other parts of the UK, the weather very kindly pulled through for us. Overnight, a delicate dusting of snow settled across the ground and — thankfully — stayed just long enough for our shoot, gifting us that wintery magic we had been hoping for.
I’d spoken to Louise earlier in 2025 about the possibility of a frosty shoot, so we went into the day knowing exactly the kind of atmosphere we were aiming for. Louise is based at a small livery yard, full of rustic charm and character, which made the most incredible backdrops. From weathered barn doors to soft winter light, every corner added something new. Even better, the hacking down the track was simply stunning, and it was the perfect way to finish the morning.
We started using locations surrounding the main barn. Rustic wooden sheds, and an indoor school with a perfect black background drop off, simple locations like this still produce beautiful images. Mack was a superstar, he was happy with whatever we suggested, and I loved seeing the relationship these two have come to life throughout our shoot.
Finishing off at the yard, and heading out to a love by turnout field, the winter sun was just shining through the trees enough to create some beautiful softness in Louise's set. Once of the benefits of having a shoot at the time of year is the late rising sunshine, that gives us so many different effects from the colours, to blazing through trees and hedges, without having to rise at very early hours to witness this. We were starting top feel the cold here, so layering top with a cosy fleece was welcomed!
To finish our shoot, we took a wander to a local woodland Louise often hacks to. This is such a lovely was to create variety within your images, and I am more than happy to hear out to these locations if you have them. With the temperatures allowing the snow to stick on the branches, it really did create a perfect surrounding for some wintery images. Mack remained his epic self, and Louise's partner joined us for this part. I love meeting horsey converted people, it's the only way am I right?
Do the above images relate to you? I'd love to hear more about your horse, and walk your through how a shoot could fit around them. Get in touch below, or give me a ring to have a casual chat - 07482238707
