What to Expect from an Equine Portrait Model Call (and How to Get the Most Out of It)
If you’ve ever seen one of my model calls for equine portraiture, and wondered what exactly that means—or what you might get out of it—this post is for you.
A model call is a chance for me to test out creative ideas, explore new locations, and update my portfolio with fresh work. But for you, the horse owner, it can be a unique opportunity to experience a professional photo session, even if you've never had one before. Here's how I approach these shoots and what you can expect if you're selected.
1. a replica of my full client experience
Model calls will go through a very similar experience to what my clients receive. I’ll still get to know you and your horse, understand your relationship, and make sure you're comfortable before we start. You'll receive a prep guide, tips for grooming, and wardrobe advice to help you feel prepared.
2. Helping You with Styling Ideas
If you’re not sure what to wear or how to style the session, don’t worry—that’s part of the fun. For model calls, I often have a particular concept or aesthetic in mind, and I’ll guide you toward wardrobe choices that complement it.
This could be:
- Classic country chic ( jeans, tweed, scarves, hats)
- Dreamy countryside vibes (flowy dresses, soft natural tones),
- Or bold, editorial-inspired looks.
3. Location, Location, Location
Sometimes the goal of a model call is to shoot at a specific location I haven’t worked in yet—whether it’s a private estate, an open moorland, or a unique stable setup. If you’re based somewhere visually stunning or have access to a place I can’t usually shoot in, that could be part of why you were selected.
But don’t worry if your yard is more “mud and muck” than magazine—it’s my job to find the beauty in every scene. I’ll scout angles, use lighting creatively, and make it work.
4. Planning with Purpose (for Both of Us)
The shoot isn’t just about capturing pretty pictures—it’s a collaboration. I’ll usually have a shot list or creative goal in mind, and I’ll share that with you ahead of time so we’re aligned.
We’ll talk about:
- Time of day
- Tack/ horse's style
- Any must-have shots you’re dreaming of ( These are your images too!)
- Safety and comfort—always a priority for you and your horse
I want you to walk away with images that mean something to you, even if you’re not purchasing a full gallery.

5. What You Get Out of It
Each model call comes with different terms, but typically you’ll receive:
- A select number of professionally edited images (with the option to purchase more if you fall in love with them)
- A real experience of what a bespoke equine portrait session is like
- A chance to create something beautiful and maybe a little magical
6. The Catch (If You Can Call It That)
In exchange, I ask for permission to use the photos in my portfolio, on social media, and sometimes in print or advertising. You’ll be helping me grow and create—and I’ll make sure the experience is worth your while.

A massive thank you goes to Gillian, and her pony Toby, for being awesome models this Spring, and just look at this set of images we captured! The weather was stunning for us, and this pair were a joy to work with.
Whether you’re a seasoned show rider or just love your pony to pieces, if you’re open to collaborating and trying something a bit different, a model call could be the perfect way to dip your toe into equine photography.
Got a beautiful bond and a horse you adore? Keep an eye out—I might be looking for someone just like you.
