Autumn is my favourite time of year, especially when it comes to planning and styling photoshoots. Autumn months bring golden light, crisp air, and the richest tones—making it the perfect season for cosy yet striking portraits. I've popped together this style guide filled with tips and tricks to help you build your outfits with confidence, while blending seamlessly with your horse and the stunning seasonal backdrops.
Outfits
Autumn loves warm tones. Think of fallen leaves, golden fields, and earthy tones.
Soft neutrals like camel, cream, or beige are always a safe and classic choice. If you're drawn to a little more colour, try rich, deep tones like forest green, deep burgundy, or navy blue. Rusty oranges work beautifully too—especially if you're surrounded by autumn leaves.
I typically advise people to avoid bright neons or distracting patterns—they can pull focus away from the story we're telling and often don’t photograph well outdoors. However, there can be an exception. Sometimes capes and jackets with amazing patterns can top off an outfit.
Layering That Looks Effortless
Autumn is such a varied season. We could be shooting on a warm evening in September, or a misty morning in early November . Therefore, layers are perfect—and they happen to photograph brilliantly. A long wool coat over a shirt and jeans, a blanket scarf thrown casually over your shoulders, a belted cardigan or a tailored blazer… these layers give movement, depth, and detail to your images.
And for those wanting to still incorporate summery dresses, aim for clothing that flows a little. Skirts that catch the breeze or dresses that move as you walk beside your horse.
Most importantly, make sure you’re warm and comfortable. If you're relaxed, your horse will be too—and that connection is what creates the most beautiful portraits.
Final Touches
Hair can be soft and styled or loosely natural. Think: relaxed waves, low buns, or loose curls. Makeup should enhance rather than mask—soft, glowy tones are ideal.
Little details like a classic country hat, characteristic belts, or a pair of long boots can be amazing accessories to finish off your styling.
And of course, your connection with your horse is what makes it all shine. No outfit can outdo a quiet moment between you, so don;t worry, we will cover all your styling together and make sure you're confident when choosing your outfits.
