Being in-front of the camera can be daunting, and I totally get it! So whether this is your first photoshoot, or you're looking to perfect your next one, knowing how to position yourself and your horse can make a huge difference in the final images. I am with you every step of the way, from showing the pose first, to adding in small pointers, here are seven useful posing tips to help you and your horse shine during your experience.
Fabulous Feet

Although many people would say feet aren't the focus of an image, for these full length portrait shots, making sure we have fabulous feet positioning can take your images to the next level. 3 super easy options are:
- Lifted/bent leg - This shows a super relaxed moments and if you can pull this off while turning to face slightly towards your horse, this is a perfect classic portrait shot.
- Crossed ankles - This is a super fun stance to pull off, and is great for shots in the stable/barn. Everyone has slightly different versions of this so go with what's most comfortable! ( P.s - if you're super lucky, your pony might follow suit!)
- Stylish Stance - This is a mixture of the two option above, and it great for when you need both feet on the floor! Weather it's weight on one hip, or a lifted heel, these ones come super naturally on the shot.
Happy Hands
Happy and relaxed hands are vital for piecing your image together with the moment. Most of our shots will be done wither in a head collar and a leadrope, or a bridle with reins over their heads. Keeping those reins loose yet tidy really expresses the connection between you and your horse. To take the images a little further, often placing a hand up on your horse's neck, shoulders, or near their muzzle makes for the perfect image. Worried about your horse standing still for these? Don't panic, if they like to fidget, we do lots of walking, relax for a second, and then set off again. For these images, we only need a second or two!
look of love
A huge part of being infant of the camera is where you're looking. We constantly switch between:
- Looking at your horse - this is perfect to give your image a more candid affect and really gives a special memory to look back at.
- Your horse has seen an imaginary unicorn? So have you! - I often say if they spot something in the distance, pretend you do too. This can create some awesome direction in your images.
- Straight at the camera - Lets be honest, most of the time you'll be trying not to laugh at my awesome assistants I have behind me doing a happy ears dance, so smiling will come pretty easily!
