Mhairi booked me at Scone Horse Trials this year, and took advantage of my Autumn Offer on at the time. We booked in a date quickly, for a few weeks after Scone had finished, and it was a great way to start Autumn shoots. There’s something truly magical about early mornings in September — when the air is crisp, the fields are covered in dew, and the first light begins to sparkle through the trees. That’s exactly the kind of morning we had for Mhairi’s shoot with her stunning grey mare, Spirit.
We began in one of the fields at the yard, where the soft golden light danced across the grass, creating the perfect backdrop for those first portraits. Spirit looked incredible in the glow, her silvery coat catching every shimmer. It’s those fleeting moments — the breath in the cool air, the stillness before the day begins — that make early sessions so special.
From there, we took a short wander into Devilla Forest, just behind the yard. It was the perfect addition to the shoot — a peaceful loop among the tall trees, with beams of light filtering through the canopy. Woodland sessions always add a sense of depth and atmosphere to the portraits, and Spirit was amazingly behaved around our loop.
Mhairi's outfits were wonderful for the shoot. We covered all bases with a floaty dress to start, super Casula and comfy for our wander, and finishing off with an outfit that fits right in the middle of the two, and gives off cosy feelings.
We wrapped up back at the yard with some stable shots, making the most of the corrugated iron barn as a simple, textured backdrop for some timeless, fine-art-style portraits. These quieter, more intimate moments always bring balance to a session, complementing the wide-open landscapes with something classic and understated.
Mhairi chose to take home her full set of digitals, along with a collection of fine art mounts, to perfectly compliment her include 16" frame of her favourite image from some of our shots in the woodland. Such beautiful ways to enjoy and share these memories. I can’t wait to see how she chooses to display her images and bring them to life in print.
